Growing the Sports Scene in Spokane
Wonderground’s new courts join other pickleball venues in Spokane, like Pickleball on Broadway, Power Pickleball Club, and the Press Pickleball Club. Many Spokane parks also have public courts.
Kyle Gaber, assistant general manager, shared,
“If you go over to Seattle, they’ve got so many parks that have 20, 30 or more pickleball courts. Hopefully this is the beginning of Spokane having a couple of those spots.”
The Wonderground bar and golf lounge opened in January. In a short time, it has become a spot for golf, drinks, and now pickleball.
“With the addition of the golf space down here, we are really trying to thrive into more of a sports complex and not just a sports bar event center. Pickleball was the easiest next step.”(Nico Salakar)
Exciting Launch and Community Events
The official launch in July will feature an all-day event with equipment demos from Selkirk Sport and local partners like Dry Fly Distilling.
“Our big focus with the event in July is really letting people know, ‘Hey, you don’t have to stop at the court, you can come down here, play a round of golf, get an old-fashioned and get some food from Victory Burger. You’re getting discounts that no one else is going to get.”(Nico Salakar )
The courts work on a self-serve system. Players reserve online and get a door code by text. Equipment rentals are planned, and staff will help during busy times.
Plans for the Future
Wonderground wants to do even more with the courts.
“We’re starting to create relationships. Once we have this hard launch, and we have everything set up, we have a lot of tenants out there, and all the equipment we need, we’re going to be striving to do competitions and events and stuff all the time.”(Nico Salakar )
This move helps Spokane’s pickleball community grow and offers locals more ways to stay active and have fun.
