Smashers Pickleball Complex: Smashers, a $5 million pickleball and restaurant complex in San Angelo, will not open on its original schedule. J.C. Gallagher, the owner, confirmed that the facility is now expected to open in the fall of 2025 due to construction problems linked to the building’s windows.
Construction Delays Slow Opening Plans
The project, located at 2521 Southwest Boulevard, was first listed in the City of San Angelo’s September 2024 permits report as pending and later moved to an issued status in November 2024. Crews began building soon after.
In October 2024, J.C. Gallagher told a reporter that the business might open by mid-to-late summer 2025. He explained that while he wanted to open early, quality was most important.
“We’re not trying to push it to speed things up,” Gallagher previously said. “We just want to get everything done correctly.”
Windows Cause Major Setback
In May 2025, Gallagher learned that the planned windows were too heavy for the building to support. A design mistake was found to be the cause. Extra supports had to be made, shipped, and installed before work could continue.
Because of this, Gallagher shared that the soft opening is now planned for September 2025, followed by a grand opening in October.
Progress Continues on Other Parts
Even with the delay, work on the facility’s heating, cooling, plumbing, and electrical systems has kept moving forward. Gallagher said construction has stayed steady apart from the window issue.
The new complex aims to bring pickleball, dining, and entertainment together in one location for the San Angelo community.
