Pickleball for Paws Charity Tournament: The Flint Hills Animal Advocates held their 3rd Annual Pickleball for Paws tournament on Saturday, June 28, at Reeble Park to raise money for animals needing medical help. This pickleball event welcomed players of all skill levels and aimed to grow support for the group’s programs.
Bringing People Together
Jenna Satterfield, the event organizer, said the idea started because pickleball was becoming popular. “We know pickleball is kind of an up and coming event, so we just decided to claim that as our claim to fame,” Jenna Satterfield said. When the Flint Hills Animal Advocates first began this fundraiser, they had to learn the game’s rules themselves.
“We learned that some people that come in are complete newbies and others are seasoned pros so it’s just been kind of fun to see the mix of people in the community all come together and play,” Jenna Satterfield said.
Tournament Details
The tournament used a double-elimination system so teams had more chances to play. This year, 12 teams competed, and each match was played in three sets up to 11 points. The event was open to everyone, helping new and experienced players enjoy the sport together while supporting a cause.
Helping Pets in Need
The Flint Hills Animal Advocates help families who cannot afford medical care for their pets. “One of the leading causes for animal abandonment is financial strain,” Jenna Satterfield said. “So if an owned pet is facing a medical crisis and their family can’t pay, we’ll step in and help them.”
Jenna Satterfield said the tournament has helped bring new people to support their work. “Some of these people didn’t turn out for our other fundraisers throughout the year and they’ve kind of turned into supporters and we really appreciate that,” Jenna Satterfield said.
Looking Ahead
The Flint Hills Animal Advocates hope to grow the fundraiser so it can bring in thousands of dollars in the future. Jenna Satterfield said the success of Pickleball for Paws shows that people enjoy coming together for a good cause and having fun at the same time.
