Kids Take the Court: CPRST’s First Pickleball Camp Inspires Next Generation of Players

CPRST Youth Pickleball Camp Launch: Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism held a youth pickleball camp to teach kids about the fast-growing sport. The camp took place June 23-26 at the pickleball courts at the Donald E. Green Active Adult Center. It welcomed players ages 8 to 16 and focused on learning the basics of pickleball.

Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Creates New Program

The pickleball camp aimed to introduce the sport to beginners and help intermediate players improve. Jamie Kirk, programs coordinator at Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism, said, “Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and we wanted to offer something for kids who are curious or just getting started.”

Camp Details and Activities

Campers learned about pickleball rules, scoring, and strategies. Instructors provided one-on-one help so every child could build skills. By the end, even beginners could play a full game.

Jamie Kirk explained, “Pickleball is easy to learn, and it’s a sport that anyone can play — young kids, teens, even senior citizens. That’s part of what makes it so appealing.”

Plans for the Future

This was the first pickleball camp hosted by Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism. Jamie Kirk shared that there is already interest in hosting the camp again next year. The department also offers tennis, music, art, and theater camps, along with a two-week STEM camp in partnership with Cullman City Schools.

Encouraging More Participation

“We’re always looking for new ways to get people active and engaged in the community,” said Jamie Kirk. “Pickleball is just one of many ways we’re doing that this summer.”

The camp showed that pickleball can be a fun and healthy activity for kids and families. Organizers hope even more children will join next year.
