Village of Dane Pickleball Courts: Residents of the Village of Dane gathered on June 28 to celebrate new sports courts at Capitol Valley Park. The upgrades include pickleball, basketball, and tennis spaces. The project gives families more ways to stay active and have fun together.
Village Board President Don Postler and Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Joseph Morgan welcomed everyone to the event. Before cutting the ribbon, Don Postler explained that the plan started in 2023 when the village created its first outdoor recreation plan.
Community Voices Shape the Park
Don Postler said, “It allows us to do things like this—to budget for things like this—and when we put that together, we knew this park didn’t have many amenities.” He pointed out the park only had bathrooms and a baseball field, which wasn’t very friendly for the neighborhood.
The community shared what they wanted most. “The community spoke and the three biggest demands were, in this order: pickleball—thank you to our pickleball folks who are here today, you are all going to teach us about a very popular game, basketball was second, and tennis being third,” Don Postler said.
The project team also made sure the courts would work well together. Public Works Director Shane Clapper learned that combining sports could cause problems, so he helped design the layout to avoid conflicts. The park now has two pickleball courts, one full tennis court, and one half basketball court.
Celebration and Learning
At the event, committee members handed out free sports equipment to kids. Some children won basketballs and pickleball sets. One girl smiled and told her parents, “I got my own pickleball set!”
After the speeches, the ribbon was cut. Kids rushed to the basketball court to start playing. Some experienced pickleball players stayed behind to teach others the rules and how to play the game.
Don Postler reminded everyone about court rules, like no bikes or rollerblades on the surface. But he also shared one simple goal: “The biggest rule is to have fun.”
These new courts are expected to bring more neighbors together and encourage people of all ages to stay active. Organizers hope this project will inspire more community events in the future.
