Moab City Backs $110K Plan to Bring Pickleball Courts to Old Spanish Trail Arena—Will Grand County Say Yes?

Old Spanish Trail Arena Pickleball Funding: The Moab City Council voted on June 24 to spend up to $110,000 to help Grand County build pickleball courts at the Old Spanish Trail Arena. The vote was 4-0 in favor of sharing costs for the courts, which are expected to be popular with both locals and visitors.

Pickleball has grown fast in Moab, but past plans to build courts were stopped by neighbors who did not want them near parks. This project would finally bring dedicated pickleball courts to the community.

Details of the Funding Plan

In a letter to Grand County Commission Chair Bill Winfield, Moab Mayor Joette Langianese explained why the city wants to help. She wrote that the project has “significant potential to enhance recreational programming available to our citizens and attract more visitors to the area, specifically those interested in the sport of pickleball.”

Originally, the city offered up to $150,000 in funding, but the final amount was reduced to $110,000. That sum equals half of the $220,000 in matching funds Grand County must put forward to secure a $440,000 grant.

Next Steps and Agreement

If Grand County agrees to Moab City’s offer, the two sides will create a memorandum of understanding. This document will set the exact terms of the partnership and how the funding will be used.

Mayor Joette Langianese shared her excitement in the letter, saying, “We are very enthusiastic about the positive impact these courts could have on our community.”

Looking Ahead

These courts could improve life in Moab by giving residents more ways to play pickleball. The new facility may also bring more tourists and help local businesses. If Grand County accepts the offer, work on the courts could start soon.
