Antigo Pickleball Club Unveils 16 New Courts—How a Small Town Became a Pickleball Hotspot

Antigo Pickleball Club Ribbon Cutting: The Antigo Pickleball Club held a big ribbon-cutting event on Friday night to celebrate the new Krueger Pickleball Courts at Jaycee Park in Antigo. The 16 courts are lit and stand-alone, giving players a great place to enjoy the fast-growing sport.

Leaders Celebrate the New Courts

Tammy Walrath, president of the Langlade County Economic Development Corporation, spoke about what this means for Antigo.

“This project has been a significant undertaking for our community and I am thrilled to see the culmination of efforts from various stakeholders come to fruition,” said Tammy Walrath. “The construction of these state-of-the-art pickleball courts is more than just a physical asset; it represents a symbol of our community’s spirits, collaboration and commitment to investing in the quality of life for our residents and visitors.”

She said pickleball has become very popular and brings health and friendships.

Mayor Tom Bauknecht thanked everyone who helped make it possible.

“Your efforts have not only enhanced the quality of life for our community, but have also made Antigo a destination location for people far and wide,” said Tom Bauknecht.

A Dream Years in the Making

Jodi Zalewski, president of the Antigo Pickleball Club, shared her excitement.

“The launch of our new pickleball courts is a testament of the power of collaboration and dedication to promoting physical activity, social connection and mental well-being,” said Jodi Zalewski.

She thanked all the sponsors and volunteers.

“We would like to acknowledge the countless hours and resources donated by our members, businesses and community organizations that have helped reduce costs and fund this initiative,” said Jodi Zalewski. “Your commitment to this cause is truly remarkable and we are forever grateful.”

Bernadette Bruner, one of the founding members, looked back on how it started in 2014.

“Since 2014, our community has come a long way in developing the sport of pickleball,” said Bernadette Bruner.

She remembered seeing the first design plans years ago.

“I must admit that I had my doubts about the feasibility of this project, but I am thrilled to stand before you today, surrounded by the reality of 16 state-of-the-art, beautiful lit and stand-alone pickleball courts,” said Bernadette Bruner.

Hopes for the Future

Langlade County Pickleball President Shane Krueger talked about why this is so important.

“We’ve always wanted this and cannot believe this has really happened,” said Shane Krueger. “We truly feel that this will be a school sport and this is going to put our kids ahead of the curve. Without the youth, we have nothing. … Bottom line, we’re having fun and we’re taking care of the youth.”

Vice President Eric Fuller shared what made it possible.

“People have asked how we pulled it off. It’s just four guys that got along, moved forward and didn’t take no for an answer. We had fun together, which makes a huge difference,” said Eric Fuller.

Treasurer Hummer Packard explained their determination.

“I think this was persistence on all four of us to pull this off in the little bit of time we did it in,” said Hummer Packard.

The event also included the Antigo Summer Slam and Jam Tournament.

“Let’s play some pickleball,” said Hummer Packard.

The Krueger Pickleball Courts are at 915 Tenth Avenue in Antigo.
