Anacortes Pickleball Court Plan: On Monday, July 7, 2025, the Anacortes City Council chose to delay a decision on a $70,000 proposal to add pickleball lines to two school district tennis courts. The courts are located at 22nd Street and K Avenue in Anacortes, Washington.
Concerns from Coaches and Council
The plan aimed to mark four pickleball courts over two of the six tennis courts by next summer. It also included work to repair cracks caused by drainage problems.
Bryan Benson, the Anacortes High School tennis coach, raised concerns about the idea.
“The lines would be confusing. None of the other conference teams have pickleball court lines on their courts, and probably some of the coaches would refuse to play in those two courts.”(Bryan Benson)
He also said that fixing cracks without solving the drainage problem might not work. The cracks could return if water issues aren’t handled properly.
Need for More School Board Input
Jonn Lunsford, the city’s Parks and Recreation director, said talks have already happened between the city and school district to address drainage.
But Council Member Christine Cleland-McGrath said she wanted more input from the Anacortes School Board before moving forward.
“Looking at the updated version, it seems really complicated for my eyeballs, and I’ve got pretty good vision.”(Christine Cleland-McGrath)
Because of these concerns, the council decided to table the pickleball court proposal.
Future Decision Still Possible
The city could revisit the plan once drainage problems are better understood and the school board provides its opinion. If approved later, the courts could help meet the growing demand for pickleball space in the community.
