Pickleball Fever Hits Canora: Yorkton Crossing Court Invasion Draws Players of All Ages

Canora Updated Pickleball Courts Event: On July 3, 2025, the newly updated pickleball courts in Canora, Saskatchewan, hosted a special event called the Yorkton Crossing Court Invasion. Organized by Gina Resler, president of Yorkton Pickleball, the event brought players from nearby towns to promote the sport.

A Growing Sport Across Canada

Pickleball has seen fast growth across Canada, and this event helped spread awareness in smaller communities. According to Ken Kolisnek, a national pickleball champion and member of Pickleball Canora, the event is part of a larger plan.

“The Canora invasion was the brainchild of Gina Resler, Yorkton Pickleball President,” said Ken Kolisnek. “Her plan is to hit different communities across the region this summer and stimulate community interest.”

Easy to Learn, Fun for All

Pickleball is known for being accessible to all skill levels. Ken Kolisnek said, “The game provides an opportunity to play for all skill sets: low, medium and high.”

It also builds friendships. “There is also a strong social component to pickleball,” Kolisnek added. “Players become like a second family.”

Gina Resler shared similar thoughts: “When we’re at tournaments in Regina, we get invites from players there to ‘Don’t worry about a hotel, you can stay at our place.’”

Equipment and Court Details

All players need is a paddle and running shoes. Ken Kolisnek described the game as a mix of tennis and ping pong. For beginners, he recommends joining a “learn to play” class.

Pickleball uses a small court (20×44 feet) with a net. The ball is served diagonally, and points are scored only by the server. Matches are usually played to 11 points and can be singles or doubles.

Reaching All Ages

Pickleball is not just for older adults. Gina Resler said Yorkton will soon start a youth program for ages 10 to 14, including a camp from July 15 to 17.

Canora will also host a fun tournament in August during Community in Bloom Week, with space for 16 male and 16 female players.

“We’re encouraging new players from Canora and around the region to try pickleball,” said Ken Kolisnek.
