Prairie Meadow Park Pickleball Gift: Residents of Westville, Indiana, will soon enjoy two brand-new pickleball courts at Prairie Meadow Park, thanks to a gift from Bowen Engineering. The donation is part of a larger $1.5 billion construction project to build a new Westville Corrections Facility, which will replace the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City. The courts are expected to be completed with lights and fencing by the end of July 2025.
The courts were donated as part of Bowen Engineering’s community give-back program. The company is the lead contractor for the new prison facility, which is scheduled to open in 2027. Prairie Meadow Park, the town’s most popular recreational space, was selected to host the new courts.
A Gift to the Community
The pickleball courts are just one benefit Westville has received through the construction of the new correctional facility. Town officials say the massive project has boosted the local economy and helped upgrade public infrastructure.
Bill McMahan of the Westville Town Council said, “As far as people being busy with jobs and keeping contractors employed, it’s been amazing. And you know it’s nice to get a benefit from the engineering firm that’s been involved with that. It’s also something that our town’s infrastructure has benefited from because we’ve been tied in with some of the infrastructure improvements that have happened, you know, with the state facilities.”
Infrastructure and Employment Boost
The billion-dollar project is not only replacing outdated prisons in both Westville and Michigan City, but also creating jobs and improving roads, utilities, and other systems around the town. Bowen Engineering’s donation of the courts highlights how private companies can support local communities through public works.
Park Will Stay Open During Construction
The construction of the pickleball courts will not disrupt access to Prairie Meadow Park. The town has assured residents that the park will remain open while the work is underway.
Once finished, the courts will feature full lighting and fencing, giving players of all ages a new space to enjoy the fast-growing sport.
