Carmel Pickleball Tournament for Parkinson’s: A local pickleball tournament will take place this Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, California. The event is hosted by Power Over Parkinson’s, a nonprofit group. The goal is to raise money to help send members of the organization to the World Parkinson Congress in Phoenix next year. Congressman Jimmy Panetta will join the event in a special game, and District 5 Monterey County Supervisor Kate Daniels will make an appearance.
Supporting Parkinson’s Through Sports
Power Over Parkinson’s helps people living with Parkinson’s disease through exercise, education, and awareness. The group is the only one of its kind supporting the Monterey Bay area. The tournament is open to the public and encourages community participation.
Terrill Dahl, the board secretary of Power Over Parkinson’s, explained the importance of the group’s mission. “We are the only entity that provides support through exercise, through awareness, through education, for people in the Monterey Bay area who are in the journey with Parkinson’s disease,” said Terrill Dahl.
Importance of the Cause
Parkinson’s disease is the fastest-growing brain disease in the United States. While there is no cure, exercise is one of the few proven ways to help manage its symptoms. The group hopes the event will not only raise funds but also bring attention to the need for continued support and education in the fight against Parkinson’s.
A Step Toward Global Awareness
Money raised from this tournament will help send local members to the World Parkinson Congress in Phoenix. This international gathering will allow them to connect with experts and others affected by the disease. The presence of leaders like Congressman Jimmy Panetta and Supervisor Kate Daniels adds further support and visibility to the cause.
