Gen Z College Pickleball Boom: Pickleball is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports among college students in the United States. Schools like the University of Alabama, Duke University, and Penn State University are building courts and creating programs to support the demand. More than 200 college pickleball clubs now exist nationwide.
Students Are Driving the Change
Once seen as a sport for older adults, pickleball is now catching on with Gen Z students. The sport’s easy rules, small courts, and low-cost equipment are part of the appeal. Many students are joining for fun, fitness, and social interaction.
Mark Chang, associate professor at SUNY Brockport, studied the sport’s growth in colleges. “They (students) want to master some kind of skill, they want to win some kind of game, and they want to be connected and engage socially,” Chang said.
Students with tennis experience are often quick to pick up the sport. Some are now playing regularly and working to improve their skills.
Health and Accessibility Add to the Appeal
Many students like that pickleball is a healthy and low-impact workout. It helps them stay fit, avoid injuries, and make new friends. Reports from Inside Higher Ed say that the sport is easy to learn and great for beginners. The smaller courts and simple rules make it more inviting than sports like tennis.
Steven Hood, Vice President of Student Life at the University of Alabama, said, “These courts appeal to a broad demographic, even some of our students who may not be as familiar with fitness and recreation. It’s a great opportunity to connect and engage students, promoting physical activity.”
Schools Respond with New Facilities
The University of the Pacific became the first college to build a pickleball court in 2024. Since then, the number has grown. Colleges like Arkansas Tech University, Eastern Mennonite University, Eastern Illinois University, Columbus State University, Wright State University, Troy University, Tulane University, and Baylor University have all added courts.
Many schools are also hiring coaches and health staff to support student players.
Competitive Play and Scholarships
The DUPR Collegiate National Pickleball Championship began in 2022. The University of Texas won the second edition of the tournament. Now, some schools are even offering scholarships to talented pickleball players.
This shows how serious the sport has become on campus, with universities investing in facilities and talent to grow the game even further.
