Mount Carmel Unveils Long-Awaited Pickleball Courts—Here’s When You Can Play

Mount Carmel Pickleball Court Opening: The town of Mount Carmel, Illinois, is getting four new pickleball courts at Mount Carmel City Park, located at 201 Willow Street. According to Mayor John Gibson, the courts are nearly finished and are expected to open by the end of summer once the final surface work is completed.

Community Demand Leads to New Courts

Mayor John Gibson shared an update on Facebook on July 15, saying the courts were a response to residents’ input.

“A couple of years ago, the No. 1 requested item from our parks survey was a pickleball court, and we heard you loud and clear,” ( John Gibson).

He added that the new fencing at the site is already up and looks great. Only one step remains—resealing the court surface—before the courts can open for public use.

What to Expect at the Park

The new area will feature four courts, giving local players plenty of space to enjoy the fast-growing sport.

“I’m excited to share that the new fencing is up at Mount Carmel’s pickleball court and looks fantastic. We’re now down to the final step: resealing the court surface. Once that’s done, the court will be ready for play!” ( John Gibson).

He also thanked residents for helping the project move forward: “Thank you to everyone who shared feedback and supported this project,” Gibson concluded.

Why Pickleball?

Pickleball is a paddle sport that mixes parts of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It’s popular with people of all ages and skills. The sport has grown quickly in the U.S. and is now the fastest-growing sport in the country.

Each court is the same size as a doubles badminton court and has lines like a tennis court. It includes a 7-foot area near the net called the “kitchen,” where players can’t volley the ball. Courts can be built new or made by changing existing tennis or badminton courts. One court works for both singles and doubles matches.

What’s Next for Mount Carmel

The new pickleball courts are expected to open by the end of summer. Once open, they will offer a new and exciting way for residents to stay active and connected. With growing interest in the sport, the town hopes these courts will become a popular spot for players of all levels.
