Mount Carmel Pickleball Courts Project: Mount Carmel’s first pickleball courts are expected to be ready by the end of September. Construction recently began as part of a larger effort to upgrade the city park, after a local study showed pickleball as the most requested feature, according to Mayor John Gibson.
Pickleball Tops Community Wish List
The city decided to build the courts after results from a Local Parks and Recreation Fund study highlighted pickleball as the top priority for residents.
“The number one requested item in that study was the pickleball,” (Mayor John Gibson).
The courts will be placed next to the current basketball courts. The next step in the construction process is to resurface the area to make it ready for play.
Park Already Seeing More Visitors
The pickleball courts are part of a multi-year plan to improve the city park. New additions like a disc golf course and updated playground equipment have already made the park more popular. Mayor Gibson said interest in the park has grown even more after news about the courts.
“I think that we’ve already seen an uptick of interest in the park just from the idea that we’re going to have a pickleball court,” (John Gibson).
Nearby towns like Rogersville and Church Hill have also built their first pickleball courts in recent months. At a Church Hill Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting last month, Mayor Dennis Deal shared a letter from a citizen who praised the new courts.
Regional Interest Growing Fast
The letter mentioned that both local players and visitors appreciated the new courts. It also described a recent pickleball tournament in Church Hill that drew 73 teams.
Mayor John Gibson believes the new courts in Mount Carmel could help local businesses by attracting more visitors to town.
“I think it’s going to be something that’s going to bring people, from outside of the city even, into Mount Carmel,”(John Gibson).
