Atlanta National Pickleball Club: The Cooler, a well-known ice rink in Alpharetta, Georgia, is being turned into a major indoor pickleball facility. The new venue, called the Atlanta National Pickleball Club, is expected to open by Labor Day weekend, according to Alpharetta.com.
John Bardis, the owner of The Cooler, confirmed the plan to convert the long-running ice rink into a modern pickleball complex. The decision is based on rising costs to run the ice rink and the fast-growing popularity of pickleball across the country.
A New Direction for The Cooler
The Cooler has been part of Alpharetta since 1997. For many years, it was a popular spot for local hockey players and figure skaters. But as interests change, so does the use of the space.
“We think, as we look at the diversification of our community here in Alpharetta — which was very different thirty years ago — that we’re going to be able to serve more people,” John Bardis told FOX 5 in an earlier interview.
He said the high costs of running an ice rink also played a role in the decision. At the same time, pickleball is quickly gaining fans of all ages, making it a strong choice for the future of the facility.
What’s Inside the New Club
The new Atlanta National Pickleball Club will offer much more than just courts for the sport. According to the club’s website, the facility will include:
- 18 indoor pickleball courts
- A restaurant with two full bars
- Wellness and spa services
- High-end locker rooms
The website also highlights the club’s goal of creating an “elevated level of service, attention to details, and a dedication to your Pickleball obsession.”
Community Impact and What’s Next
The transition from an ice rink to a pickleball venue marks a big change for Alpharetta’s sports and recreation scene. While longtime ice rink users may miss the old space, the new club hopes to draw in a larger and more varied group of people.
With the project moving ahead and Labor Day weekend as the target opening, Alpharetta residents can soon expect a brand-new place to play, relax, and enjoy the fast-growing game of pickleball.
