Kuching South City Council Pickleball Championship: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) officially launched the first Mayor Pickleball Championship 2025 at Picklepro Kuching. Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng led the opening ceremony, marking the event as part of a city-wide plan to promote healthier lifestyles and stronger community ties through sports.
The championship welcomed participants of all ages and aimed to introduce more residents to pickleball—a fun and fast-paced sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis.
A Sport for All Ages
During the launch, Dato Wee Hong Seng explained that pickleball is growing rapidly around the world and suits people of all ages.
“For those unfamiliar with the sport, pickleball isn’t something from the kitchen despite its name,” he said.
“It’s a fun, fast-growing game that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. Whether you’re 15 or 65, pickleball is a sport for everyone.”
The mayor hopes that the event will inspire people across Kuching to pick up a paddle, get active, and enjoy the game.
Linking Health and Recreation
Dato Wee Hong Seng highlighted that the championship supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being. He said MBKS is working on new ways to get people moving, thinking positively, and spending time together.
“We want our youth off their phones, away from negative influences, and onto the court doing something energetic and fun,” he added.
The tournament reflects MBKS’s broader vision of making Kuching a Healthy City. This includes promoting activities that are fun, accessible, and bring people together.
Building a New Sporting Culture
MBKS hopes the Mayor Pickleball Championship will become a yearly tradition that boosts the sport’s presence in the city. With global interest in pickleball growing, the city sees this event as a way to build a new sports culture in Kuching.
Dato Wee Hong Seng thanked everyone involved in organizing the championship. This included the Kuching Pickleball Association, volunteers, and sponsors.
Wee ended his speech with an energetic call to action:
“Let’s serve, smash and rally. Game on, everyone!”
Growing Impact
This championship is more than just a tournament. It represents a shift toward healthy living, social bonding, and positive habits for youth and adults. As interest in pickleball grows, MBKS hopes to expand its role in shaping Kuching’s future through sport and community activities.
