Cracks and Frustration: Marine Park’s New Pickleball Courts Already Falling Apart—When Will the City Act?

Marine Park Pickleball Court Problems: The pickleball courts at Marine Park in Brooklyn, which were opened just two years ago, are already falling apart, according to local players and volunteers. Cracks, bubbling, and peeling paint were first noticed in October 2023, but the city has not yet fixed the problems.

Damage Appeared Just Months After Opening

Volunteers who look after the courts daily say they saw the damage only two months after the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation opened the eight new courts. They say they expected repairs to begin in spring 2024, but no work has been done.

“This problem is beyond what we can maintain,” said Mike, a longtime volunteer who helps care for the pickleball courts.

Players and Volunteers Frustrated by Delays

People who play regularly at the park say the surface conditions are getting worse. Many are worried that the cracks and peeling paint will make playing unsafe. The volunteers say they’ve done what they can, but fixing this kind of damage is too much for them.

The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation, however, says most of the courts are still in good shape. According to the department, the damage is because of paint work that was not done by city staff.

City Responds But Sets No Timeline

The department said it checked the courts and found no reports of injuries. A spokesperson also said the city’s sports coating team will resurface the courts—but there’s no set date for when that will happen.

Councilmember Mercedes Narcisse said she has been asking the Parks Department to act.

“I’ve been pressing the Parks Department to make the repairs,” said Councilmember Mercedes Narcisse in a statement to News 12.

What Comes Next?

While the Parks Department has promised repairs, players and volunteers are still waiting for action. Without a timeline, it’s unclear when the courts will be safe and fully usable again. The growing frustration shows how important it is to maintain public sports spaces properly, especially when they are used by the community every day.

The new pickleball courts at Marine Park are cracking and peeling just two years after being built. Volunteers noticed damage in October 2023. Though the Parks Department says repairs are planned, no date has been given. Councilmember Mercedes Narcisse is urging the city to fix the courts quickly.
