Demolition Kicks Off $11M Uptown Columbus Pickleball Complex—Game-Changer for Sports and Community

Uptown Columbus Pickleball Complex: Demolition work has begun on 3rd Avenue in Uptown Columbus, Georgia, marking the start of a long-awaited 28-court pickleball facility. The project, fully funded through donations, grants, and city support, has been in planning for over three years. It is expected to open in early 2026.

Plans for the Facility

According to Lance Tankersley, president of the Columbus, GA Pickleball Association, the new facility will include 28 courts — 16 covered, six outdoor, and two championship courts.

“We are doing the whole facility,”

said Lance Tankersley. The covered courts will allow play in all weather, a major benefit for players who often face cancellations.

Boost for the Local Economy

A study by Columbus State University estimates the project will bring over $11 million in economic impact and create more than 60 jobs during construction. Once open, it is expected to attract hundreds of visitors each year and serve as a social hub for the community.

Player Excitement

Local resident David Theriault said,

“We have to drive 45 minutes to Opelika to play in their facility, which is covered courts.”

He recalled attending a tournament in North Georgia.

“500 or 600 people came for the weekend for that tournament. What an economic income impact to the area, filling up, where we eat, where we stay when we travel for tournaments,”

he said. Theriault added,

“I think that’s going to be great for Columbus as well.”

Social and Cultural Impact

Tankersley said the location between the baseball stadium and Uptown’s main attractions would strengthen the area’s role as a community space.

“The social aspect of it for Uptown, is kind of book-ending between the baseball stadium and this is pretty much the farthest of high Uptown that you can get,”.

“So, with those two aspects and the whole everything Uptown has to offer, it’s going to be a true social hub.”( Lance Tankersley)

Next Steps

Construction is set to start before the end of the year. Once completed, the facility will be handed over to the city, ensuring it remains public, affordable, and open to all residents.
