Buchanan Recreation Park Pickleball Court Upgrades: Botetourt County will celebrate the opening of its new dual-use pickleball and tennis courts at Buchanan Recreation Park on August 15 at 6:00 p.m. The project also includes upgrades to the basketball courts at Buchanan Elementary School, funded by the Recreation Incentive Fund.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at Buchanan Recreation Park, with parking available at Buchanan Elementary School, 255 Schoolhouse Road, Buchanan. Following the ceremony and a short program, the courts will be open for tennis and pickleball until 10:00 p.m. Light refreshments and giveaways will be available.
Community Vision and Planning
These improvements are the result of years of planning, community feedback from the 2023 Quality of Life Survey, and a goal to provide more recreational spaces. Botetourt County Director of Parks and Recreation Victor Morales said,
“Botetourt County residents deserve quality recreational facilities. These resurfaced courts are for the people! This project was a direct result of community members advocating for a safe place to bring the whole family out to play.”
Buchanan Recreation Park features two tennis courts, two pickleball courts marked over one tennis court, and a softball field. While the park is not on school property, it shares a parking lot with the elementary school. Outside of school hours, the school’s playground, walking track, and athletic fields are open to the public.
From Plan to Reality
The resurfacing of the tennis courts was first included in the county’s 2022 Capital Improvement Plan. By 2023, the idea expanded to create dual-use courts for tennis and pickleball, which has grown rapidly in popularity.
In partnership with the Buchanan Elementary Parent Teacher Association, the county also awarded a $5,000 recreation incentive grant to resurface the school’s basketball courts and install new hoops. This project was completed in May 2025.
Looking Ahead
Botetourt County officials thanked community members, staff, and partners for their support. The new facilities are expected to serve residents of all ages and encourage active lifestyles.
