Pickleball Tournament to Special Olympics: In a unique blend of sport and charity, Denmark High School’s new pickleball club recently made waves with a standout fundraiser. On Sunday, July 21, the high school, embracing the country’s fastest-growing sport, hosted a pickleball tournament that not only showed rising talent but also raised over $1,400. This initiative, spearheaded by a group of enterprising seniors, was more than just a game; it was a heartfelt effort to support local athletes heading to the Special Olympics.
The fundraiser’s success was marked by a substantial donation to Special K’s, a local organization dedicated to helping athletes train for the Special Olympics. Tyler Smith, a key player in the initiative, expressed his deep connection to the cause.
“I’ve been a part of the Special K’s for a few years now, and it’s an incredible organization that gives kids with special needs the opportunity to compete in the Special Olympic Games. So being able to give back to such an amazing organization made this tournament that much more special.” – (Smith)
The funds raised will cover participation costs for over 30 athletes and partners attending the Special Olympics Fall Games in October. Chris Bray, the local coordinator for Special K’s, highlighted the profound impact of the donation.
“The money raised by these students is so impactful.” – (Bray)
“What makes the donation even more special is that it was intentional and comes from young people. It is cliche to say children are our future, but a more inclusive society will only happen if embraced by future generations. The Special K’s are so thankful for this thoughtful group of Denmark High School students.” – (Bray)
The tournament itself was a hit, featuring 64 players. Asad Punjwani and Moiez Lokhandwala emerged as the top competitors, taking home the winning prizes. Anqi Yu, a participant, reflected on the experience:
“My partner and I had a great time playing in this pickleball tournament!” Yu said. “The students at Denmark High School were excellent hosts. We can’t wait to see what’s next from this group of students!”
This event not only highlighted the growing popularity of pickleball but also showed how high school students can use their platform to make a significant difference in their community.
