Smash the Silence Pickleball Fundraiser: A charity pickleball tournament will take place this Saturday at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School to raise funds for the Stand With Everyone Against Rape (SWEAR) program. Organized by SWEAR in partnership with Martha’s Vineyard Community Services’ CONNECT to End Violence and sponsored by Vineyard Family Tennis, the event is called “Smash the Silence.”
The competition is open to all skill levels — beginner, intermediate, and advanced — with two-person teams able to join in men’s, women’s, or co-ed categories. Entry fees and donations will support student trips off-Island, including past retreats and visits to the Healthy Youth Summit in Boston.
Promoting Respect Through Sport
SWEAR has been running for more than ten years, working to help young men challenge gender norms, confront rape culture, and promote respect. The group meets weekly, with more than 30 members, including about 25 boys and six girls. Advisors include Amy Lilavois, Matthew Malowski, and Jack Pachico, a former SWEAR member who now teaches at the school.
“This event blends together Malowski’s two greatest passions: educating young men on how to grow into adulthood as a valuable member of society and pickleball,” Lilavois said.
Community Support and Participation
The tournament will be held at the school’s tennis courts. Donations can be made at the event through a QR code provided by community services. Organizers confirm there are still openings for players to join.
By combining sport and social education, the fundraiser aims to give students meaningful experiences while strengthening SWEAR’s mission to build a more respectful community.
