Mount Carmel Fast-Tracks Pickleball Courts After Residents Rally for New Recreation Hub

Mount Carmel Pickleball Group Initiative: MOUNT CARMEL — Residents and city officials gathered Friday morning at Mount Carmel Park for the grand opening of new pickleball courts, a project completed in less than four months after strong community demand.

Community Request Turned Reality

Mount Carmel Mayor John Gibson said the courts were built after residents voiced their interest in having more recreational opportunities.

“It’s been something that we’ve got a lot of feedback from the community that they wanted, and I’m tickled that we were able to get this installed and so quickly,” John Gibson said. “It’s a great addition to our park.”

The courts were originally planned for the 2026 fiscal year budget, but the project was moved up and finished much sooner than expected.

City Leaders’ Priorities

City Recorder Tyler Williams explained that adding pickleball courts was part of the board’s main priorities for the new budget year.

“The board met earlier this year for strategic planning,” Tyler Williams said. “One of their main goals was to add pickleball courts. So as soon as our budget year started, that’s one of the first priorities we had.”

John Gibson noted that a Local Parks and Recreation Fund study identified pickleball as the top requested addition in the community.

Park Improvements Underway

The new courts are part of a multi-year plan to update Mount Carmel Park, located at 221 Maple Street. Recent improvements include a disc golf course and new playground equipment. The pickleball courts are next to the basketball courts.

Tyler Williams said the project was finished earlier than expected. “We’re glad to have it open a little bit earlier, and look forward to the community being able to enjoy this extra amenity up here at the park,” he said.

Looking Ahead

Mount Carmel joins neighboring cities Church Hill and Rogersville, which also offer pickleball courts. The upgrades aim to bring more people to the park while boosting community engagement and recreation opportunities.
