Multi-size Pickleball Courts at Howell: Howell Township proudly celebrated the grand opening of its brand-new pickleball courts at Deerwood Park in the Ramtown section, a significant milestone in the park’s transformation. After a much-anticipated two-year renovation project, the upgraded facilities are now open, providing the community with top-notch recreational opportunities.
Multi Size Courts
The renovation of Deerwood Park has brought about notable changes. Previously, the park housed a variety of amenities including a large play structure for children, four little league fields, batting cages, roller hockey rinks, and a skate park.
Responding to Pickleball’s Popularity
The shift to pickleball courts was driven by the sport’s surging popularity and the underutilization of existing amenities. The decision was also influenced by observations of basketball nets in driveways and streets, leading the township to focus on refurbishing existing facilities to meet new recreational needs.
“We also noticed that pickleball has become extremely popular and the township does not currently have any courts for use by the general public.” – (Howard)
Funding and Future Prospects
The Deerwood Park renovations were supported by a $74,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. The new pickleball courts are available for use from 7 a.m. to sunset and are open to players of all levels, from beginners to experts. While there is no reservation system in place currently, officials are prepared to implement one if demand proves consistently high.
In addition, the township has introduced the Team Reach app for local pickleball enthusiasts, with a group named “Ramtown Pickleball” to help organize and engage the community. Should the sport’s popularity continue to rise, there are plans to explore the construction of additional pickleball courts in other parks throughout the township. Township Manager Joseph Clark also mentioned ongoing plans to resurface and repaint the remaining outdoor skating rink, further enhancing the park’s recreational offerings.
