Pickling in Perham Summer Classic Smashes Records With 15% Surge in Players—Young Talent Shines

Pickling in Perham Summer Classic Growth: The third annual Pickling in Perham Summer Classic brought in 115 players and 67 teams during the two-day event held on August 16-17 at the pickleball courts in Arvig Park. Organizers said this year’s registration rose 15% compared to last year, with more younger players joining the tournament.

Strong Participation Across All Ages

Linda Zurn, one of the event organizers, said,

“This year the age range was from 18 to 76 years old.”

She added that the growth in participation was seen across all groups, reflecting increasing interest in the sport in Perham.

Fred Voss and his son Derek, who have a cabin on Ottertail Lake, joined the tournament to bond, exercise, and meet new people.

“Pickleball is a fun and addictive sport that uses strategy and has a fun competition. A 12-year-old beat me the other day, but that’s OK; that’s part of the fun.”(Fred Voss)

Weather and Volunteer Support

The tournament faced a delayed start on Saturday, August 16, due to heavy rain. Linda Zurn explained, “Thank you Mother Nature,” noting the storm passed south of the area. She added that the courts must be dry to play, and the Perham Scouts were on hand to help dry them if needed.

Community Support and Sponsorship

Becky Lommen, who helped run the tournament, highlighted the role of volunteers and Perham Pickleball Club members in ensuring the event ran smoothly. She also noted support from sponsors, including KLN and Long Weekend Sportswear, which helped maintain a high-quality competition for all participants.

Significance of the Event

The Pickling in Perham Summer Classic continues to grow, attracting players of all ages and skill levels. The event strengthens the local community, promotes physical activity, and supports social connections. With rising participation, future tournaments are expected to draw even more players and spectators.
