Downtown San Diego will welcome its first-ever Gaslamp Urban Pickleball tournament this Thursday, turning Fifth Avenue into open-air courts for competition and entertainment. The weekly series begins August 21 and continues every Thursday until September 25, starting at 4 p.m. and running until sunset.
Event Details
The tournament will be held on Fifth Avenue between Market Street and Island Street. Eight temporary courts will be set up, creating a unique downtown sports environment. A live DJ will provide music during each event, with DJ Steez from Temecula performing at the opening tournament.
Tickets and Participation
The event is open to all ages and skill levels. Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased ahead of time or on-site. Players who register will also receive drink specials at nearby bars and restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter.
Added Entertainment
Alongside the matches, attendees can spin the “Wheel of Serves,” a prize wheel offering Gaslamp gift cards, pickleball gear, and weekly mystery prizes. The games will follow a ladder-style format to keep players engaged throughout the evening.
What to Bring
Participants should bring their own paddle, athletic shoes, and a water bottle, though limited paddle rentals will be available. Water refill stations will be set up at the site to keep players hydrated.
Community Impact
By introducing the city’s first urban pickleball courts, the series combines recreation with nightlife in one of San Diego’s most popular districts. Organizers hope it will encourage more residents and visitors to try the sport and connect with the growing pickleball community.
