Huntingburg Park Fast-Tracks Pickleball Court Expansion—Concrete Switch Adds More Play, Ends Delays

Huntingburg Park pickleball Court Expansion: The Huntingburg Park Board voted on Monday to expand its pickleball project by adding a third court and switching the surface from asphalt to concrete. The move, costing just over $2,000, allows city crews to finish construction by the end of the year instead of waiting for outside contractors.

Delays in the Project

The courts were first added to the city’s budget in 2023, but the project has faced repeated setbacks. The first delay came from building a retaining wall that matched League Stadium’s design. More recently, issues with the asphalt contractor slowed progress.

Mayor Steve Elkins explained that the chosen contractor has struggled to fit the project into its schedule. The company faced a backlog due to local street projects and a fire earlier this year at its asphalt plant.

“We’ve been waiting for our contractor on the asphalt forever,”

said Mayor Steve Elkins.

“They’re still saying they are so far behind right now.”

He added that the company had planned to delay equipment use for the pickleball courts until it could be combined with street work, which could have pushed the project into next year.

Budget and Next Steps

By shifting to concrete, the city will avoid further delays, as its own crews can handle the work. The project’s total cost remains within the previously approved budget of about $15,000, most of which was carried over from 2023.

The board’s decision ensures that residents can expect the courts to be ready sooner, with an extra court added without exceeding the original financial plan.

Community Impact

The changes mean Huntingburg residents will soon gain three concrete pickleball courts instead of two asphalt ones. The adjustment not only speeds up the project but also provides more space for the growing interest in pickleball within the community.

News in Brief: Huntingburg Park Pickleball Court Expansion

The Huntingburg Park Board approved changes to its pickleball court project, adding a third court and replacing asphalt with concrete. The $15,000 project, delayed since 2023, will now be completed by year’s end using city crews. The switch avoids contractor delays and meets the community’s rising pickleball demand.
