McDonough Park Pickleball Court Repairs: Eau Claire residents called for urgent repairs to pickleball courts at McDonough Park during the City Plan Commission meeting on August 18, 2025. Community members said the courts are unsafe and asked for $190,000 to resurface them, citing the sport’s fast-growing popularity in the area.
Concerns About Safety and Usage
Speaking first, Chippewa Valley Pickleball Club member Mr. Nicastro stressed that the courts are used by about 100 players daily. He said the condition report showed serious safety risks and urged the commission to reconsider the park’s funding.
Long-Term Issues with Old Courts
Resident and volunteer Mr. Jeff Lorenz supported the request, noting the courts’ base is more than 50 years old. He said patchwork resurfacing has not solved the problem, adding that the facility needs major repairs for safe play.
Dangers for Senior Players
Another resident, Penny Graham, raised concerns about cracks and uneven surfaces. She warned these conditions are especially risky for older players. Graham asked the commission to fund improvements, saying McDonough Park is one of the city’s busiest recreational areas.
What’s Next
The commission did not make an immediate decision. However, the strong turnout highlighted growing demand for better pickleball facilities. The funding request is expected to be reviewed in future budget talks.
