Bedford County Pickleball Court Opening: Bedford County celebrated the grand opening of its first outdoor public pickleball courts on Wednesday morning. The six new courts, located off Bedford Avenue near the County Health Building, are open to players of all ages and mark a major step for recreation in the community.
Community Support Leads to New Courts
The project came after strong support from local residents who pushed for more recreational spaces. Stuart Saunders, director of Bedford County Parks and Recreation, said the new courts are the result of that advocacy.
“These new courts represent more than just a place to play. They are a testament to what can happen when a community invests in health, recreation and connection,”(Stuart Saunders0.
Facility Upgrades
The new courts were built on the site of former tennis courts. A basketball court was also added nearby, creating a larger space for community recreation. Saunders said the changes will provide lasting benefits for county residents.
Community Excitement
Mickey Johnson, a member of the Bedford County Board of Supervisors, said the courts will energize the area.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve seen this kind of crowd here at the courts. And with the softball fields next door over there and the basketball right behind us, I think we’re going to see a new life to this area,” (Mickey Johnson).
Local resident Dan Lovelace praised the courts as welcoming to both new and experienced players.
“To have this place to come and play is just a really nice addition to the opportunities here in Bedford County,” (Dan Lovelace).
Looking Ahead
The new pickleball courts are open on a first-come, first-served basis. With their addition, Bedford County now offers more opportunities for residents to play, connect, and stay active.
