Community Planning Behind the Project
The project was led by the San Francisco Tennis and Pickleball Planning Roundtable (SF-TAPP). This group works to improve tennis and pickleball facilities across the city. To find the right location, SF-TAPP held surveys and reached out to the community. The goal was to identify spaces that were not being used much and could be converted for pickleball.
SF-TAPP is preparing a full recommendations report that will be released next month. This report is expected to guide more projects like the one at Crocker Amazon Playground.
City Leaders Support Growth
San Francisco Recreation and Park Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg highlighted the city’s long-term vision for recreation. “These new courts are part of a broader, long-term commitment to expanding equitable access to high-quality recreation throughout San Francisco,” he said.
Pickleball’s popularity has risen quickly in the city. In 2018, San Francisco had just 12 pickleball courts. Today, the number has grown to more than 90, showing how much the sport has expanded in only a few years.
