New Pickleball Courts Set to Transform Troeger Park—Ottumwa’s Bold Move to Boost Recreation and Tourism

Troeger Park Pickleball Courts Project: The Friends of Ottumwa’s Parks nonprofit organization received unanimous approval from the Ottumwa City Council to turn old tennis courts at Troeger Park into eight new pickleball courts. The project will be fully funded by the group without city money.

Plans for Troeger Park

The new courts will be located across from the Bridge View Center, where the current tennis courts are already marked for pickleball play. The group will raise money for construction, including the removal of the old courts.

Support from Officials

Repurposing this space for pickleball represents a practical use of existing infrastructure and a forward-looking step for our city’s recreational offerings,” said David Nino, representing Friends of Ottumwa’s Parks.

Nino added the new courts would “meet community demand, attract regional tournaments and generate tourism dollars.” He also noted they would “bring vibrancy to our parks as well, and connect to our trails and surrounding amenities, and help re-energize this highly visible corner of the city.”

Council member Bill Hoffman Jr. also supported the project. “You know, I believe we don’t need another parking lot. We need more things like this,” he said. “It’s in a perfect spot for all the development that’s going on there. It’s a positive thing and it’s a great place for it to be.”

Long-Term Vision

Nino said the plan fits with the city’s 2040 Greater Ottumwa Parks Plan, which focuses on improving quality of life. “We have momentum with all the progress going on in town,” he said. “So now is a good time to act.”

Why It Matters

The project is expected to give new life to unused tennis courts while adding a fast-growing sport to the city’s recreational offerings. With no cost to the city, the effort could boost local activity, draw visitors, and improve the park’s connection to nearby attractions.
