Pickleball World Cup DUPR Selection: The Pickleball World Cup will take place from October 27 to November 2 at The Fort in Florida, with over 60 countries competing. For the first time, DUPR scores are the official rating used to select players for national teams, giving players a fair and universal way to qualify.
From a Family Idea to a Global Event
The World Cup began with two siblings from Peru: Hercilio Cabieses (DUPR 5.987) and Miranda Cabieses (DUPR 4.761). During the pandemic, they taught pickleball in parks, drawing chalk lines and making the sport accessible for all ages.
“When we founded Pickleball Peru, we wanted to give everyone access,” said Hercilio Cabieses. “But then we realized that this sport isn’t just national, it’s global. Why not create a World Cup?”
The first World Cup was held in 2023 in Lima, Peru, with 14 countries. A year later, 32 nations joined. This year, more than 60 countries are confirmed.
Representing Your Country
Wearing a country’s jersey is a special honor for players.
Valentina Rosales (Venezuela, age 14) said, “It was my first time representing Venezuela. I didn’t expect to win, I just wanted to play my best. But I ended up with two gold medals. Playing in front of flags from all over the world, feeling that pressure; it was the most amazing experience of my life.”
Steve Rose (USA, Senior Captain) added, “Putting on the USA uniform is such an honor. I’ll never make the Olympics, so this is the next best thing.”
DUPR: The Global Pickleball Standard
DUPR is now the official rating system for selecting players for national teams. Federations around the world use DUPR to set minimum ratings or select top players.
“DUPR has become the global language of pickleball,” said Hercilio Cabieses. “Some federations set minimum DUPR ratings to even apply for the team. Others pick their top players based directly on their DUPR. It’s what makes competition fair across borders.”
For players, maintaining an up-to-date DUPR score is essential to compete internationally.
World Cup Format and Opportunities
The World Cup includes elite matches and an International Open Tournament where juniors, seniors, and amateurs can compete, representing their countries even if they are not on national teams. Medals are tallied by country each day, so every win contributes to a nation’s total.
Events include a parade of nations and live broadcasts on Telemundo Deportes, creating a high-energy, global pickleball experience.
The Big Picture
The Cabieses siblings aim to make the Pickleball World Cup as large as the FIFA World Cup someday. With DUPR keeping competition fair and the sport growing worldwide, the World Cup could gain global recognition and even a shot at the Olympics.
Even players who are not pros can be inspired, with similar formats appearing in DUPR Leagues and DUPR Clubs worldwide.
