The Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Center is undergoing major renovations while celebrating a top honor from the United States Tennis Association (USTA). The facility, which has served the Steamboat Springs community for more than 30 years, was one of 45 sites recognized with the USTA Outstanding Facilities Award during a ceremony at the U.S. Open in New York.
National Recognition for Excellence
Meg Tully, the center’s executive director, said the award reflects the team’s dedication to both the sport and the local community.
“The award means that we are doing an exemplary job of growing the sport of tennis to inspire healthier people and elevate our Steamboat community,” said Tully.
Director of tennis Jason Scicchitano added that the complex has earned national recognition before, but this was the first time it received the USTA Outstanding Facilities Award.
Ongoing Renovation Project
Built in 1991, the center is in the middle of a $1.8 million renovation project. Construction began in July and aims to improve both player experience and energy efficiency.
“The new exterior membrane and insulation will facilitate energy efficiency, making it easier for us to maintain comfortable playing temperatures for our players. The new indirect LED lights will match USTA standards, making it much easier for players to see the ball,” said Tully.
Scicchitano said the current phase, which includes completing the exterior membrane and installing new lights, is expected to finish by October 15.
Future Upgrades Planned
Once the current phase is done, leadership plans to move into Phase 2. This will include repainting the indoor courts, upgrading bathrooms, revamping the welcome center, and possibly replacing the HVAC system, depending on available funds.
“After this urgent phase is completed, we will look at Phase 2 of the renovation project, which includes repainting the indoor courts, upgrading the bathrooms, revamping the welcome center, and potentially replacing the HVAC system — all depending on our funding status,” said Scicchitano.
Fundraising Progress
As of April 2025, the center had raised $1,395,700 of the $1.8 million goal. Brittanny Havard, director of development, confirmed fundraising is ongoing.
Despite construction disruptions, Scicchitano said the community has embraced the upgrades. “The construction process is fairly invasive, but our tennis community is excited about the renovation and knows it’s a major upgrade that needed to happen,” he said.
Looking Ahead
The recognition from the USTA highlights the center’s importance in promoting racquet sports. With renovations underway, the facility is preparing to offer even better experiences for players while maintaining its role as a cornerstone of Steamboat Springs’ sports community.
