Tyrone Pickleball Tournament Smashes Records—$2,000 Raised for Local Charity in Spirited Community Showdown

Tyrone Pickleball Tournament Charity Event: Pickleball players gathered on August 2 at the Reservoir Drive courts in Tyrone for a community tournament. The event drew 42 players and 10 volunteers, with participants traveling from places like Lock Haven and Johnstown. The highlight was a $2,000 donation to Samaritans Promise, a local charity.

Community Participation

According to Tyrone Pickleball Club President Donna Reese, most players came from State College, Tyrone, Altoona, Philipsburg, Johnstown, and Huntingdon. Clubs represented included Tyrone Pickleball Club, State College YMCA, Blair County Pickleball, and Bernel Briners of State College.

Growth of the Club

The Tyrone Pickleball Club has grown quickly since it began just a few years ago. Membership now stands at 92, with more players welcome to join. Reese said, “Scheduling has been going well with no issues. There are two nets at the courts in a box for use by anyone. We have not had any players approaching us for courts when we have been playing, but have a system in place should we need it to allow for walk-ons and court use if we get busier.”

Year-Round Play

Pickleball in Tyrone continues year-round as long as the courts remain dry. The sport offers competition, exercise, and friendships, which keep players engaged even in the colder months.

Learning Opportunities

For those interested in learning, Reese announced, “We are offering another free, no obligation lesson on September 20, at 2 p.m. Register by emailing tyronepickleball@gmail.com.” Additional details are available by contacting Reese at (814) 312-2068 or through the club’s Facebook page.

Lasting Impact

The tournament showed how pickleball can unite players of all ages while also giving back to the community. The $2,000 raised for Samaritans Promise highlights the role of sports in supporting local needs, with the club planning to expand opportunities for play and learning.
