Jaquith Park Pickleball Expansion: Construction of six new pickleball courts will begin in early September at Jaquith Park in Newberg, Oregon. The Chehalem Park and Recreation District board approved a $785,879 contract with Lee Contractors of Battle Ground, Washington, on July 17. The project also includes resurfacing nearby tennis courts, keeping the facility closed until at least the end of the year.
Project Details
The six dedicated pickleball courts will be built on a grassy area just east of the tennis courts. The plan will not affect the nearby horseshoe pits. When complete, Jaquith Park will feature two tennis courts, six pickleball courts, and two dual-use courts marked for either sport. According to the district, this will allow flexibility for up to four tennis courts and six pickleball courts, or two tennis courts and 12 pickleball courts. The work is part of a broader plan that also includes two new pickleball courts at Renne Field in southern Newberg.
Planning and Approval
The park district received city approval for the design in April. The city required additional street lighting on North College Street and noise-reduction measures for both tennis and pickleball courts. The engineering firm NV5 completed the design, survey, permits, and bid process for $77,867 after being hired in August 2024.
Advisory Committee’s Role
The expansion of pickleball facilities was guided by the district’s Pickleball Advisory Committee. Formed in 2021, the committee was meant to end in 2024 but was extended due to high demand for more courts. Nick Konen, the committee’s liaison to the board, said,
“We formed the committee in October 2021, but really shifted our focus and energy to pushing for any amount of covered, lit courts in late 2022 and early 2023.
Once the dedicated courts are complete with a cover and lighting, we hope to improve the areas around the courts by providing seating and comfortable waiting areas.”(Nick Konen)
Committee president Mike Kringlen highlighted the sport’s growing popularity.
“Pickleball continues to gain momentum throughout the world for players of all skill levels. Many people like myself plan our vacations to destinations with indoor and outdoor pickleball facilities.”(Mike Kringlen)
What This Means
The new courts at Jaquith Park mark a major step in expanding pickleball opportunities in Newberg. With added facilities, players will have more access to both tennis and pickleball. The project reflects the community’s growing interest in the sport and ongoing efforts to meet public demand.
