Sterling Heights Unveils $10M Pickleball Complex—Michigan’s Next Big Sports Destination?

Sterling Heights Pickleball Complex Project: The city of Sterling Heights announced plans to build a $10 million state-of-the-art pickleball complex. The project, funded by a voter-approved millage, will turn property at 35630 Van Dyke Avenue near 15 Mile Road into Michigan’s second indoor pickleball facility, covering 37,000 square feet.

Features of the New Facility

According to Sterling Heights Parks and Recreation Director Kyle Langlow, the facility will include nine pickleball courts, table tennis courts, gathering spaces, a party room, and other amenities.

“Seeing how pickleball continues to grow, it’s made the most sense to expand our capacity even further to serve the needs and the growing demand of pickleball in our residents,” Kyle Langlow said in an interview with WWJ Newsradio 950’s Darrylin Horne.

Pickleball, a fast-growing sport in the U.S., combines badminton and tennis on a smaller court. It is played with paddles and a plastic perforated ball and is popular for being easy to learn and suitable for all ages.

Dedicated Space for the Sport

Kyle Langlow said many recreation centers share time between sports like basketball, volleyball, and pickleball. He explained the importance of a new model. “We have many recreation centers and community centers around the state that are no different than what we were doing at our community center here, where it’s pickleball, you know, for a couple hours, then basketball, then volleyball. To have a truly dedicated facility is something that’s almost unheard of across the state.”

Community Feedback and Timeline

The city will host a community listening and feedback session on Tuesday, September 20, at 4:30 p.m. at the Sterling Heights Community Center.

The new complex is expected to be completed by next summer and will provide residents with expanded access to pickleball and other activities.
