Riverside Park Pickleball Court Upgrades: Mount Airy Parks and Recreation announced that the six pickleball courts at Riverside Park will close next week for resurfacing. Work is scheduled to begin Tuesday, with completion expected by September 12. The project will cost $32,400 and aims to improve conditions for local players.
Construction Timeline
Parks and Recreation Director Peter Raymer confirmed the work would begin next week.
“The construction schedule may change based on the weather, but the plan is to begin work to resurface the six pickleball courts beginning Tuesday,” Peter Raymer said Wednesday.
He added, “But if everything goes smoothly, they could be open a few days prior.”
Community Requests for Upgrades
The closure follows a request earlier this year from the Mount Airy Pickleball Club. In May, club members asked city commissioners to improve the Riverside Park courts and submitted a petition with 67 signatures.
Club member Butch Martin told officials, “The courts aren’t unplayable at this point, but they probably soon will be.”
Ongoing Expansion of Facilities
Mount Airy Parks and Recreation apologized for the inconvenience but expressed support for the improvements. “But we are excited for the improvements,” the department stated.
Riverside Park currently has six courts, with three added in 2023 to meet growing demand. City officials also plan to build more pickleball facilities at the upcoming Carter Street Park on the other side of town.
