How a Pickleball Potluck at Club Northwest Turned Strangers Into Friends This Labor Day

Club Northwest Pickleball Potluck Event: Club Northwest in Grants Pass celebrated Labor Day with a free community pickleball potluck. The event invited players of all levels to enjoy friendly games and share food, highlighting the sport’s mix of competition and social connection.

Why People Play Pickleball

Former professional player David Johnson said pickleball is popular because it is simple to learn and accessible to everyone.

“Some people are here for competition, some people are here for the social aspect,” David Johnson said. “Some people are here for both.”

Member Experiences

Club Northwest member Mischa Fiske shared how pickleball became part of her daily life. She said the sport helps improve cardio, balance, and mobility while being fun.

“I’ve never been a person who wants to just go run on a treadmill,” Mischa Fiske said. “You can play really relaxed, you know, casual games, but you can also play really competitive games. For me that’s fulfilling because I have a competitive streak and so I enjoy that part of it as well.”

Building Community at the Club

The fitness center’s focus is more than fitness—it is also about connection. Jesse Sallas, director of programs at Club Northwest, said the members make the club strong.

“Club Northwest wouldn’t be here without our members in the community,” Jesse Sallas said. “Just how great our members are and coming out on a holiday, be able to hang out, and this being a part of their day.”

What’s Next

Club Northwest plans to continue its holiday gatherings, with the next event scheduled for Halloween. In addition, every Tuesday the gym hosts free pickleball and provides paddles and balls for anyone who wants to play.
