Nichols Park Pickleball Courts One Step Closer—Will Community Support Seal the Deal?

Nichols Park Pickleball Court Funding: Two Jacksonville city council committees voted in favor of seeking a state grant to build new pickleball courts near the Ludvig Pavilion at Nichols Park. The finance committee and the parks and lakes committee both gave support during their meeting on Tuesday night.

Cost and Funding Plan

The proposal, prepared by Bryan Canon of Hutchison Engineers, sets the cost at $725,000 for two tennis courts that would include eight pickleball courts. The city would cover half, about $362,500, while the other half would come from the state grant.

Finance committee chairman Don Cook said the city has money for the match but admitted it is a difficult choice.

“He acknowledges concerns raised from others there last night about the city’s needs and financial commitments the council has already made. But, he says the funds are there in investments.”

Application Deadline and Timeline

The grant application must be submitted by the end of this month. The city must show that matching funds are available at the time of the application. If approved, the money would not be spent until 2026 or 2027, giving supporters of the courts time to raise extra funds to reduce the city’s share.

Different Views on the Cost

Parks and lakes committee chair Lori Large Oldenettel said the price was not as surprising to her as it was to others. Mayor Andy Ezard and Don Cook had expected the project might cost over $1 million.

Oldenettel said residents must also play a role.

“Oldenettal says those backing the courts must form a committee and actively raise the money to help offset the costs to help pay the city’s share.”

Opposition from Council

Alderwoman Theresa Heape was the only member to speak against the plan. She argued that the money should be used for other needs in the city.

What Comes Next

The full city council will vote Monday night on whether to move forward with the grant application. If approved, the project would move into the planning phase, with community support likely playing an important role in covering costs.
