Southwick Pickleball Court Grand Opening: Southwick officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 25 to open two new pickleball courts at Town Hall. The courts, part of a multi-sport facility at Prifti Park behind the Senior Center, are designed to keep seniors active while also being available to the public.
A Resource for Seniors and the Community,
“This project reflects our ongoing commitment to keeping seniors moving and socially connected,”
said Southwick Senior Center Director Lisa Anderson.
“Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and this new space provides seniors with a fun, safe, and healthy way to stay active while also being a great recreational asset for the entire community.”
The new space also includes a basketball court and shuffleboard. Seniors have priority during the day, but the courts open to all residents during other hours.
“I am very happy to have these activities for the seniors of Southwick. The more activities, the better. Thank you to all who made this possible,”
said Council on Aging Board Chair Paula LeBlanc.
Planning and Funding
The idea for permanent courts began in September 2023 when the former Senior Center director proposed them after strong interest from seniors who had used temporary courts. Originally, four courts were suggested for Whalley Park, but the plan later expanded to six.
In December 2023, residents approved $115,000 for the Town Hall courts and $207,000 for Whalley Park courts through Community Preservation Committee funds.
Overcoming Challenges
Early in 2024, the Parks and Recreation Commission questioned if $115,000 would cover the Town Hall courts. A proposal was made to cancel them and build only six at Whalley Park.
The Council on Aging opposed the idea and sought advice from Russ Anderson, then interim Building and Grounds Director and now a Select Board member. He found the project could be completed for $107,636. Based on his findings, the commission moved forward with the Town Hall courts.
A Larger Wellness Effort
The outdoor courts are part of a broader health initiative at the Senior Center. Programs include pool tables, a fitness gym, indoor shuffleboard, dance classes, and yoga.
“We invite residents of all ages to visit, participate in activities, and learn more about the expanding programs available,” (Lisa Anderson).
Looking Ahead
The courts highlight Southwick’s commitment to active living and community engagement. With new facilities at both Town Hall and Whalley Park, residents of all ages will have more opportunities to stay fit and connected.
