End of Summer Pickleball Tournament: Organizers of Hancock’s End of Summer Celebration are inviting players to join a pickleball tournament this weekend. The event starts Saturday at 10 a.m. at Laurn Grove Park and emphasizes fun and social play over competition. Teams must register as pairs, and the cost is $10 per player.
A Relaxed Tournament Atmosphere
Tournament organizer Rick Freeman said the event is more about enjoyment than official competition. “The word tournament kind of puts people into a spin,” Freeman explained. “It’s more of a fun thing and a social thing than like an official tournament… there were a couple of events where we had people up on the hill watching.”
Participants and Divisions
Teams from Marquette and Ontonagon are already signed up. Freeman hopes to attract more players for the women’s division and enough participants aged 75 and older to create a separate bracket. He emphasized that each player must bring a teammate. “There’s still time to sign up,” Freeman said.
Registration Details
Mary Kaminski, co-organizer of the tournament, said players should register by Friday. Interested participants can call or text Kaminski to secure their spot. The entry fee is $10 per player, and all teams must be registered as pairs.
Why It Matters
The tournament provides a fun, social way for local residents to enjoy pickleball while celebrating the end of summer. It also encourages community engagement and offers an opportunity for new and experienced players to connect.
