Allentown Pickleball Court Plans: Allentown could soon get its first public pickleball courts. County officials submitted plans in late August to build outdoor pickleball courts as part of the new Allentown Recreation Center. The facility will be located on 2.3 acres on State Road 89, just south of Calvary Baptist Church.
The project could be approved as soon as next week, according to County Finance Director Sabrina White. The recreation center is aimed at giving residents access to fitness and sports in the community.
Growth of Pickleball in Santa Rosa County
Pickleball has grown in popularity across Santa Rosa County, especially since the pandemic. The sport is played on a court about the size of a badminton court, using paddles and a perforated plastic ball. It combines elements of several sports and appeals to all ages and skill levels.
The pickleball courts will be built on land donated by the Allentown Fire Department. County Commissioner Rhett Rowell, whose District 3 includes the site, said the recreation center will be the first of its kind in the community, which had a population of 1,023 in 2020.
Cost and Construction
Sabrina White said the county can install the pickleball courts using in-house labor for $50,000, compared with more than $200,000 if contractors were used. A $30,000 grant has also been received to purchase equipment for the fitness court portion of the project.
The Allentown Recreation Center will provide residents a safe place to play pickleball while promoting fitness and community activity.
