Jacksonville’s $725K Pickleball Court Plan at Nichols Park Sparks Debate—Will It Transform the City’s Recreation Scene?

Nichols Park Pickleball Court Expansion: Jacksonville may soon get eight new pickleball courts at Nichols Park if the city council approves a grant. A joint City Council committee voted to recommend the grant, with a final decision expected Monday at the full City Council meeting. The project could start as early as 2026.

The courts would be part of a plan by Hutchison Engineering and placed on the east side of Morgan Lake along Park Road in an area called Ludwig Park. The project includes sidewalks, a parking lot, and fencing. If approved, court lines could also allow the courts to double as tennis courts.

Funding and Costs

The project is estimated to cost Jacksonville $362,500, though total costs could reach $725,000. Matching funds would come from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources through its Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development Grant. The grant helps cities develop parks and open spaces. The application deadline is Sept. 30, and the project must be finished within two years.

City officials expressed surprise at the price. Mayor Andy Ezard said,

“I thought it had 600,000 written all over it – $1.2 million project. I mean, I was sold mentally on that.”

Support and Concerns

Some city leaders expressed caution. Don Cook, former police chief and finance committee chair, questioned whether pickleball was just a fad. Councilwoman Terrisa Heape voted against the recommendation, noting other projects might take priority.

Still, committee members highlighted potential economic benefits. Adlerman Joe Lockman said,

“Besides the fact we’re going to bring in people from out of town, that’s going to do nothing but benefit our restaurants and shops. We’re also going to beautify, and it will beautify the park even more.”

Community fundraising could also help cover the city’s portion of costs, but funds must be available before project approval. Kathy Murray, a retired Jacksonville resident who has played pickleball since the 1980s, said she is excited for the new courts and hopes local charities will support the initiative.

The next City Council meeting begins at 7 p.m. Monday at the Jacksonville Municipal Building.
