$414K Pickleball Courts Put on Ice: Budget Woes and Turf Debate Stall Spillman Park Project

Spillman Park Pickleball Court Delay: The Culpeper County Board of Supervisors has decided to delay plans for new pickleball courts at Spillman Park in Jeffersonton. The project, which was estimated to cost $414,000 and included a paved parking lot, will not move forward this year due to tight budget limits.

Budget Concerns Delay Project

Stevensburg Supervisor Susan Gugino opened the discussion at Tuesday’s meeting, saying, “We had a very tight FY26 budget.” She explained that funding could become available once revenue begins flowing from approved data centers over the next few years.

Location Debate

Jefferson District Supervisor Brad Rosenberger disagreed with the proposed site for the courts. He noted that adding courts there would mean losing a multi-purpose field that is heavily used for soccer. “You’re losing the multi-purpose field—they fill it up playing soccer,” Rosenberger said. He supported postponing the project until the next budget cycle, calling that approach fiscally responsible.

Next Steps

Parks and Recreation Director Andrew Hardy told the board he would present options for other possible locations at Spillman Park during the next budget planning process.
