New Pickleball Facilities at Fit Life Fitness: Chester County- Fit Life Fitness is set to elevate its pickleball offerings with the upcoming launch of eight full pickleball courts and four skinny singles courts later this summer. The expanded facilities mark a significant enhancement for pickleball enthusiasts in the area.
Zakk Miller, who began playing pickleball seven years ago, has been instrumental in coaching new players at various local venues, including the Phoenixville YMCA, Spring Valley YMCA, Phoenixville Recreational Center, and Smashville in Pottstown. As of June 11, Miller has taken on the role of pickleball director at Fit Life Fitness, a new facility in North Coventry Township, Chester County.
Environment for New Players
Miller’s coaching experience spans primarily with players aged 50 and older, focusing on those new to the game or in the beginner to intermediate skill levels. “It creates a welcoming space,” Miller notes. “My goal is to go through all the fundamentals of the game and teach them the rules and positioning on the pickleball courts.” This includes technique, groundstrokes, and spins—aiming to help players seamlessly integrate into the pickleball community and find their games.
“The rules take a while to learn,” Miller adds. “The best way to learn is to keep playing—it’s a really easy game and anyone can pick up a paddle and pickleball and pop away like a ball around.”
Coaching, Coordination, and Community
In his new role, Miller will handle both coaching and managerial responsibilities. Compared to tennis, he finds pickleball easier to coordinate due to its less complex nature. “It’s an easier sport to pick up than tennis,” he explains. “It’s for all ages and pickleball is a good first step to racket sports for the younger generation.”
Miller, who resides in Phoenixville, maintains his own game by playing two to three times a week. “At Fissher Park in Phoenixville, there’s a wonderful public group there where I play mix and match,” he says. “I also play at private pickleball courts in Pottstown.”
Miller highlights two main apps for finding community play: Team Reach and Meetup. “Players can use a self-rated system of 1 to 5 to match up with others of similar ability,” he notes. “4.0 sessions are high-level and 2.5 is more beginner level.”
Notable Achievements
Reflecting on his own competitive experiences, Miller recounts his father, Eric Miller, who owns Smashville in Pottstown. Eric explained that Zakk’s gold medal at the draw tournament in San Miguel Allende, Mexico, was a notable achievement, given the mix of partners in each round.
Zakk Miller sees pickleball as a great opportunity to meet new people and has enjoyed witnessing the sport’s increasing popularity over the years.
