Ridgeway Bets Big on Pickleball: New $225K Sports Complex Promises a Game-Changer for All Ages

The town of Ridgeway is building a new multiuse recreation complex with pickleball as its main feature. The $225,000 project will include three pickleball courts along with other sports facilities. Ridgeway Mayor Craig O’Der said the goal is to give residents more local options for recreation.

Plans for the Complex

The complex will be built on Almond Street, behind the town’s post office. Ridgeway purchased the property for $30,000. The site will be across from the town’s existing park, making it a natural expansion of the area. The project is expected to be completed in October.

Mayor Craig O’Der said,

“It’s going to be a special venue. We have a tremendous ability to provide recreational opportunities right here in the town of Ridgeway.”

Pickleball at the Center

The facility will feature basketball, street soccer, and hockey courts. However, Mayor Craig O’Der believes pickleball will be the main attraction. “Pickleball is such a hot sport right now,” he said.

He also noted the sport’s wide appeal.

“I think it’s great exercise that a lot of people enjoy. It’s easy to learn and it’s really transcendent,

all ages from youngsters to the retired. Some of the best pickleball players I’ve seen, one of my best friends, his parents were tennis players and now they’re pickleballers. I’d put them up against anybody who plays pickleball, they are so good at it.”

Community Support and Funding

The county contributed $100,000 toward the project. Officials said they wanted to create a venue for residents who often travel to places like the Smith River Complex in Martinsville. Mayor Craig O’Der added that he and town staff visited other communities for inspiration, including Jaycee Park in Collinsville.

Impact Beyond Ridgeway

Mayor Craig O’Der hopes the new courts will allow Ridgeway to host pickleball events and tournaments, including those for people with disabilities. He believes the project will benefit not only Ridgeway but also surrounding areas.

“This really looks like this is going to benefit the whole community,” O’Der said.
