Franconia Rec Center Pickleball Courts Upgrade: The Fairfax County Park Authority announced plans to improve Franconia Rec Center by adding dedicated tennis and pickleball courts. The proposal includes converting half of the existing tennis practice courts to pickleball-only and returning “Tennis Court #3” to tennis-only use.
New Court Layout and Features
The redesigned facility would feature three dedicated tennis courts, six dedicated pickleball courts, and two practice courts with a stroking wall. This plan builds on recent improvements at the rec center and is designed to meet growing demand for racquet sports.
The Park Authority is seeking sites that allow both sports to have dedicated spaces, using creative designs and existing court surfaces. Similar upgrades have been made at Wakefield Park in Annandale, where dedicated tennis and pickleball courts were added.
Project Timeline and Access
Conversion of the practice courts into two pickleball courts could start as early as late September. These courts may open this winter with a blacktop surface, fencing, nets, and playing lines. The full project is expected to be completed by spring 2026.
Until the final completion, “Tennis Court #3” will remain a dual-use court with portable pickleball nets available. Community members can also use the Park Amenity Locator to find other courts in the county.
Public Feedback
The Park Authority encourages the public to share feedback on the proposed changes. Comments will be accepted until 5 p.m. on September 28, 2025, helping officials ensure the redesign meets community needs.
