Inside Greenwich’s Stunning New Civic Center: Pickleball Courts, Luxe Lounges, and All-Age Fun Await

Cohen Eastern Greenwich Civic Center Pickleball: The Cohen Eastern Greenwich Civic Center has officially opened, offering versatile spaces for sports, wellness, and community activities. The center features multipurpose gyms, three indoor pickleball courts, activity rooms, lounges, and outdoor fields, designed to serve residents of all ages for recreation, meetings, and events.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

The new Civic Center, which had its soft opening in April, was funded by a $5 million gift from the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Foundation and a $500,000 contribution from Icy and Scott Frantz, whose name adorns one of the gyms. The center includes two large gyms: one with a traditional sports floor for basketball, and another with a wood-look surface ideal for pickleball and volleyball. Both gyms have high ceilings, and the second gym connects to a commercial kitchen for catering and rentals. TV screens around the facility display scheduled activities.

Spaces for All Ages

Patricia Triano, recreation superintendent, highlighted the center’s focus on youth. “Peak times will be after school when kids come here,” she said, noting areas for homework and lounges for parents. Scott Johnson, chairman of the board of Parks and Recreation, said, “One of the fun things was that people on the board picked out unusually nice furniture for the waiting areas.” Modern couches, high-top tables, and vending machines make the lounges comfortable for all visitors.

Outdoor Amenities

The Civic Center also serves outdoor sports, including soccer, lacrosse, softball, tennis, and pickleball. Dedicated bathrooms with water dispensers and Adirondack chairs on the back patio provide convenience and comfort for families and players.

Current and Upcoming Activities

Currently, the center offers open gym basketball, drop-in volleyball, pickleball, and Tiny Tumblers classes. This fall, youth baseball, basketball, field hockey, pickleball, softball, track, and an adult basketball league are planned.

The Cohen Eastern Greenwich Civic Center provides residents with flexible indoor and outdoor spaces for sports, wellness, and community gatherings, enhancing recreational opportunities across the town.
