Clash of the Paddles Pickleball Tournament: The YMCA of the Northwoods held its 8th annual “Clash of the Paddles” Pickleball Tournament at Pioneer Park. More than 90 participants of all ages came from across the state to compete. The tournament raises funds for the YMCA’s pickleball program, with winners earning trophies and bragging rights.
Growing Age Diversity in Pickleball
Marilyn Dushl, the forever well coordinator for the YMCA of the Northwoods, noted this year’s event attracted younger players. “We’re having a few younger people participate in our tournament. In the past I have to say pickleball was a sport for those 55 and older but I see a younger generation that’s really taking over and enjoying pickleball too,” Dushl said.
The tournament continues to appeal to older participants as well. Jeff Hoffman and Jennifer Buehler said the younger players bring energy and new talent to the sport. “It’s drawing more and more talented people to play pickleball, and it’s a fun sport,” said Hoffman. Buehler added, “It’s changed in the last several years, I used to play with people that were my age and I was one of the younger people and I’m no longer one of the young people.”
Social and Physical Benefits for Youth
Dushl emphasized that pickleball is not just physically beneficial but also helps younger players socialize. “Younger people I’m not sure how exactly they can socialize in a healthy way. So I think this is a great way that they’re seeing that they can have fun, socialize as well as have a competitive edge,” she said.
The tournament’s proceeds go directly to supporting the YMCA of the Northwoods’ pickleball program, ensuring more opportunities for the community to enjoy the sport.
