Bed Bath & Beyond Pickleball Conversion: Goleta may soon see a new indoor pickleball facility inside the former Bed Bath & Beyond building at the Fairview Shopping Center. The City of Goleta has approved a land use permit to allow the site at 189 North Fairview Avenue to shift from retail use to indoor sports and recreation.
Permit Approval and Early Steps
The Picklr organization plans to lease the empty space, which has been vacant since summer 2023. As part of the approval, the city confirmed that the shopping center has enough parking for the planned use, according to Kelly Hoover, community relations manager for the City of Goleta.
Hoover also said that architect Paul Poirier of Poirier Architects filed a request for a demolition permit to begin converting the building. However, he has not yet submitted official construction plans.
Site History and Past Considerations
Before this proposal, the City of Goleta considered using the space as a temporary home for the Goleta Valley Library during its construction period. At the time, the shopping center sought a longer-term lease instead.
Residents first noticed the development notice posted outside the property a few weeks ago, sparking interest among local pickleball players.
Current Options for Players
While pickleball fans await the outcome of the proposal, outdoor courts remain available at Evergreen Park, Jonny D. Wallis Neighborhood Park, and the Goleta Valley Community Center.
Looking Ahead
If the project moves forward, the facility could provide a major boost for indoor pickleball in Goleta, offering more year-round options for players. The final timeline will depend on construction plans and approvals in the coming months.
