Greenbriar Park Scores Big: Fairfax Unveils Five New Pickleball Courts Amid Sport’s Local Boom

Greenbriar Park Pickleball Court Expansion: Fairfax County will add five new pickleball courts at Greenbriar Park this fall to meet rising demand for the sport. The courts will open first with temporary striping and later receive permanent markings in 2026.

Why Greenbriar Park Was Chosen

The Fairfax County Park Authority selected Greenbriar Park after reviewing its 2021 Pickleball Study and its updated version. Officials said the park stood out because of its easy neighborhood access, large parking lot, on-site restrooms, and Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility.

“Key considerations include geography and access, parking availability, ADA connectivity, environmental and neighborhood impacts, lighting, and long-term maintenance,” authority officials said.

Court Features and Parking Changes

The new courts will include perimeter fencing, secure gates, and shaded seating. To make room for construction, the county will remove 24 parking spaces. “A parking audit determined that this reduction will still accommodate existing park uses as well as the new pickleball activity,” officials said.

Pickleball’s Rise in Fairfax

Pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. Since 2020, Fairfax County has invested $2.4 million to expand pickleball, adding 60 new courts—an increase of over 300 percent. Today, the county has 92 courts, with 20 dedicated to pickleball and 72 shared with other sports.

“Demand for pickleball has been steadily increasing, unlike anything we’ve seen with other recreational activities in recent years,” officials said. “While we haven’t been formally tracking request numbers, community interest and input have been strong and consistent.”

Public Access and Future Projects

All Fairfax pickleball courts are free for walk-on play. Players can also reserve courts for $15 per hour with a three-hour minimum. While no new projects are scheduled immediately, the county continues to explore opportunities.

On September 11, the Fairfax County Park Authority announced a plan to build six more courts at the Franconia Rec Center in Alexandria. That proposal is open for public comment through September 28.

Looking Ahead

The new Greenbriar courts will give Fairfax residents more dedicated space for pickleball and support the sport’s growth in the region. With more facilities being planned, pickleball is set to remain one of the county’s fastest-growing recreational activities.

News in Brief: Greenbriar Park Pickleball Court Expansion

Fairfax County will add five new pickleball courts at Greenbriar Park this fall, with permanent markings coming in 2026. The project includes fencing, shaded seating, and reduced parking. Since 2020, the county has added 60 new courts. Officials continue to study more expansions, including a proposal at Franconia Rec Center.
